Hip Hop Dance Routines

The Swing, a West Coast dance step, is becoming more and more popular among young and old alike. Everywhere you turn there are videos being made teaching viewers how to master the moves in the ever-popular dance. The dance moves are not that hard to learn but, as with other things in life, it takes patience and a good partner. If you are a fast learner and want to burn off some energy, then you will definitely enjoy the hip-hop dance step called the Swing.
  1. What to Expect

    • Dancing is not only fun and relaxing but it also allows you burn off extra calories by speeding up your heart rate. There are many hip-hop dance styles around, but one style that is very unique is that of the West Coast dance move called the Swing. The Swing is done with a partner so it is a great dance to try out on the dance floor. Learning how to Swing is not that hard to do. It is one dance step that you learn in as little as one hour--assuming you have the right partner.

The Swing has only two elements to worry about. These are known as the sugar push and the anchor. This dance move does not take advantage of flailing arms, spinning on the floor, or carrying your partner ten feet before you drop them or they get dropped. It is a very sexy and low impact dance move that has a bit of jazz in it. Let's take it apart and see how to do it.

Starting It Off on the Left Foot

    • First, learn the foundation of the entire dance--the sugar push. If you are leading, you will want to go back on the left foot, and then push back on the right foot. Your partner follows your moves but starts off on the opposite foot and continues to use the opposite foot as the leader throughout the dance sequence. Next you will want to tap your left foot next to the right one. This unique combination is also called the triple step by some choreographers. For those who are uncoordinated, this part of the dance move may be the hardest to learn. But now that you have down the basic part of the dance move, let's move on.

    Putting the Final Spin onThings

    • From the last position, you will want to move forward using the left foot. The next move is called the anchor step which essentially covers two beats. To complete the anchor steps you will actually reverse the steps that you made up to now. You will move backwards on the right, then the left and so forth. There are other steps that you can combine with the basic steps shown here. However, unless you are willing and patient enough to learn them with your partner, you can perform the dance moves with these simple steps alone. This dance can be done alone with little adjustments or with a partner. Dancing with someone is great when you take the moves to the dance floor. As you move in sync with your partner, others out on the floor will look at you in awe!
