How to Do the Spongebob Dance

The "Spongebob" dance has nothing to do with the animated children's cartoon from Nickelodeon. Invented in Baltimore, Maryland, it is danced to a form of house or club music. The "Tote it Remix" song, recorded by K-Swift is most commonly played for club patrons to dance the Spongebob. However, K-Swift, who was a well-known Baltimore D.J., died in July 2008, according to "The Baltimore Sun." Since then, the dance spread out of Baltimore through online videos of dancers demonstrating the move and teaching the simple steps.

Instructions

    • 1

Play your Baltimore club music. This will get you started with the dance. Relax and listen to the music. Move to the rhythm to feel the music. Stand with your feet shoulder distance apart.

    • 2

Lift up your right leg slightly off the ground, stretched out. Stand only on your left leg. Put the weight of your body on the left leg.

    • 3

Tuck in your right leg and then jump onto the ball of your right foot while extending and lifting your left leg. You are now placing your weight on the right leg.

    • 4

Tuck in the left leg and then hop on to the ball of the left foot while extending the right leg. Basically, you are hopping onto each foot. Repeat this dance move to the beat of the music.

    • 5

Quicken the pace to double the time. As you do it faster, bring the knee slightly across your chest when you hop from foot to foot.
