Determine what kind of club you will go to most often. Tailor your learning to that style of dancing. In addition to house music and Top 40 clubs that cater to a general style of dance, there are Latin dance clubs, ballroom dance clubs, rock dance clubs and more.
Enlist the help of a dance trainer, professional hip hop or street dancer or friend who is a great dancer. Check your local classifieds and dance schools for lessons in a variety of dance styles. You can also order videos that teach club dance moves or watch online videos that give instructions and advice on improving your steps.
Learn to feel the beat in music. One of the most effective ways to improve your dancing is to let go of stiffness and move your body to the beat of the music. Practice tapping out or counting the beat to songs on the radio. Build a playlist with the types of music you want to be able to dance to and listen to it regularly. Most songs have a four-count beat pattern, but some use three counts or five counts.
Practice dance moves at home first. Become comfortable with the way your body feels as you utilize new moves before you try them out on the dance floor. Relax your muscles as you practice and open up your body by using your arms in new moves and using a bigger space around you.
Call a friend to help you practice partner dancing at home. This will give you a feel for how much space your body can use when you're dancing with someone. You can also ask for pointers and tips while you show off your new moves. Once you feel comfortable with the improvements, head out to the club to put everything into practice.
