Dance Recital Theme Ideas

Dance recitals are used in many cultures s a form of cultural expression, entertainment and recreation. To create a dance recital, many key elements must be implemented to create a specific tone and achieve the theme of the recital. The theme is a vital factor with many dance recitals. The theme sets the mood for the event and allows the audience to prepare for the dance experience.
  1. Disco Theme

    • Disco is a form of dance that originated in the 1970s and has a variety of specific features attached to it. Reference the classic disco film "Saturday Night Fever" featuring John Travolta in the recital. Use bright and bold-colored strobe lights and a disco ball hanging from the ceiling to establish disco lighting. Costumes should be bell-bottomed and tight fitting to tie in with the disco theme and also accentuate the movement of the dance. The dance style is a high held dance instead of low setting like hip hop. Utilize typical music of the movement during the preshow and intermission.

    '80s Theme

    • The 1980s are commonly remembered for the clothing styles, hairstyles and the music of the era. Clothing and music dramatically changed from the '70s and reached a new "neon" phase. When creating an '80s dance theme, utilize the trends in costumes and music choices. The costumes should be brightly colored, such as neon orange, lime green and hot pink. Utilze music from the era, using artists such as Salt-N-Pepa or even the New Kids on the Block. Lighting can be as bright as the costumes, tying in all the colors.

    Michael Jackson Theme

    • The King of Pop revolutionized the dance and music world. He created his own style of dance just by feeling the music. The moonwalk and hard-hitting arm movements make his dances unforgettable. Make sure to incorporate his dance style for each specific song. Use glitter and sequins to accentuate the costumes. Hang posters with Jackson's song titles. Utilize recognizable costume pieces, such as the single white glove, in the dances.

    Bollywood theme

    • Bollywood, a style of Indian culture, has become a respected and replicated cultural trend. The method of Bollywood dancing is very reserved. Each hand motion or body movement has to be very specific. When incorporating a Bollywood theme, the costumes typically consist of richly colored, draped fabrics with gold accents. The décor for a Bollywood theme can be cultural-based or landscaped. Bollywood songs tend to tell the story of a warrior going off to war or a prince and a princess in love. Using a cultural look gives a balance for the audience to understand the storyline and feel for the song.
