Recital Theme Ideas

Dance and music classes celebrate students' achievements by presenting a recital. Adding a theme to the recital can help build excitement and turns the presentation into a production. One of the best ways to build a theme is to incorporate it into group lessons and activities throughout the semester. It's easy to find a theme that works for your students.
  1. Hollywood Galore

    • Movies provide a rich source for selecting themes and accompanying music. Many memorable movies come from books themselves, such as “The Wizard of Oz.” Romance or science fiction genres work well, too. You could try a "books-to-movies" theme where music and costuming relate to a book that has been turned into a film, such as “Nim's Island” or “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.”

Other theme ideas could focus on Disney films for a children's recital or Oscar-winning films for older students. Performing to songs from their favorite movies energizes students, and audiences enjoy the familiar show when it is presented with a new twist.

    Famous Composers

    • Celebrate famous composers in dance and music recitals. Build a theme around a single composer or a group of composers from a particular genre or specific era. A wide variety of options range from Johann Sebastian Bach to Andrew Lloyd Webber. A recital celebrating the classical compositions of Bach may be best suited for a music or ballet recital, while Webber's Broadway show tunes are ideal for a dance recital with simple or elaborate costuming.

    Circus Theme

    • A recital to generate excitement in younger children would include a circus theme. Dance recitals would benefit from the visual interest created with circus costuming. Recommended songs include “Pop Corn,” “Elephant Walk” and “The Jolly Clown.” Hang yards of inexpensive fabric to resemble a circus tent. Refreshments could include popcorn, snow cones, cotton candy or specially decorated cake or cupcakes.

    High School

    • High-school-themed movies, television shows and plays have music suitable for music or dance recitals. Older audience members would appreciate musical numbers from“American Graffiti” and “Grease.” Teen students and audiences may be more familiar with tunes from “High School Musical” and “Glee.” Select songs that deliver the right balance between high energy and relaxed melodies to keep the recital interesting for an audience.

    Seasonal Themes

    • The change of seasons offer an opportunity to capitalize on the spirit of upcoming holidays. June and July are great times for patriotic American themes that celebrate independence or history. Fall is prime for harvest themes with or without Pilgrims and Native Americans. Halloween themes in October present options for fun recitals for all ages. A Haunted House theme would provide a visually interesting stage and be ideal for classical and modern music, songs from movies and hip-hop.
