How to Dance the Pauses in a Tango

The ballroom style of the Tango can be performed in a variety of styles and with varying choreography, however, the Tango is universally regaled as a sensual and seductive dance. Part of what makes the Tango so seductive is the use of tension in the dance between the two partners. There are pauses in the dance where the stillness creates a palpable tension. Mastering the execution of these pauses can enhance the overall quality of a couple's Tango performance.

Instructions

    • 1

Feel the pauses in the music, which will help you prepare for them in the steps before and after the pauses. Tangos often tell stories, such as a a flirtation between two people, use the pause to further tell the story.

    • 2

Finish the movement from the step before the pause. The pause does not dictate an abrupt halt to the performance. Keep your movements fluid and follow through.

    • 3

Take the cues for the pause from the leader (or man) if you are the follower (the woman) in the dance. The leader always directs the follower in the Tango. Read his cues for the pause, paying attention to his hand placement, arm tension and eyes.

    • 4

Place the pause on the second beat if you are the leader in the dance.

    • 5

Build tension in the pause by utilizing eye contact and firmly holding your dance box or hold.

    • 6

Maintain the weight distribution of your stance, whether you are on the right foot only or both feet, if you are the follower, unless cued otherwise by the leader.

    • 7

Touch the leader's leg seductively with your free leg, if applicable, to further accentuate the pause and enhance the sensuality of the dance.
