How to Make a Turn When Dancing With a Partner

Dancing with a partner can take on a lot of varieties, from swing to salsa to everything in between. For beginners that are mastering the basic moves of dancing though, the typical slow dance waltz is a good place to start. And since most dances involve turning, rather than moving in purely straight lines, it's important that you learn how to turn when dancing.

Instructions

    • 1

Take up the starting position. You and your partner will be face each other, left hands holding each other. The man places his hand on the woman's hip, her with her hand on his back. A respectable distance between you is acceptable, and it helps you stop from stepping on each other's feet.

    • 2

Lead with your upper body. If you're turning to the right, guide your partner by pulling her hand to the right and moving your upper body first. This signals the turn and it gives a warning for the footwork to come.

    • 3

Pivot on your right foot and turn, stepping forward with your left foot. Your partner, mirroring you, will step back with her right foot and pivot on the left to keep pace. For a turn to the left simply change the steps. For a turn going backwards rather than forwards (pulling your partner after you) simple reverse the back and forward directions.
