How to Make a Spinning Staff With Tape

A staff is a relatively light-weight length of wood, metal or PVC that a dancer can use as a prop, used in fire, glow and "flow" styles of dance. Fire staffs must be outfitted with kevlar to absorb fuel, and glow staffs must be rigged with LED lights and electrical supplies, other forms of dance staffs can be decorated inexpensively and elaborately with colorful gaffer's, duct and electrical tape.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose a length and width of PVC pipe that is comfortable for you. You should determine the length of the staff based on your height. The staff should be between 12 and 18 inches shorter than you are, and it should be easy for you to grip without being too small.

    • 2

Request that the pipe be cut to your desired measurements at the store where you purchased it. Most home improvement stores have a cutting center, and they are more than happy to accommodate your request.

    • 3

Choose your tape colors and pattern before you apply the tape. Gaffer's tape has a rougher texture than electrical tape, which will help you grip it as you perform. Duct tape and electrical tape are both slicker and reflective, adding sparkle and pizazz to your performance piece. You may want to be mindful of the way your tape selections will interact with your costume or other performance gear, as well.

    • 4

Wrap the tape according to the pattern you have chosen. You can spiral the tape around your staff, or make horizontal or vertical bars. Plaid is even a possibility, if you're patient enough to weave the tape onto the staff.

    • 5

Apply the end caps last to secure the tape in place.
