How to Know If You're Singing Through Your Nose

The neighbor's little dog that won't shut up may be the only sound worse than nasal singing---but at least there's a remedy for the singing. You can learn to tell the difference between singing from your chest and from your nose. The nasal sound comes from too much air being let out at once across your hard and soft palates. The key to perfecting your singing finesse is controlling your breathing.

Instructions

    • 1

Pinch your nose and read a paragraph. Notice if your voice sounds more nasal than normal. If it does, then your singing voice is naturally nasal. The key is to control how open your throat is as you speak and sing.

    • 2

Use a voice recorder to record your reading while pinching your nose.

    • 3

Play back your recording and take note of when your voice sounds more or less nasal. This will show you where you need to focus and which sounds are tripping you up.

    • 4

Practice reading with the voice recorder until you're happier with the sounds you are making. Translate your new way of breathing and speaking into your singing practice.
