How To Know if Your Voice Needs to Rest

A performer that sings on a daily basis, even in practice, has to take care of her mental and physical health to keep her voice in tip top shape. If you're singing several hours per day, it doesn't leave a lot of room to stress your voice when you're not singing. This includes talking and laughing loudly or even clearing your throat harshly. This can lead to voice fatigue and compromise your ability to perform. If you find your self in this situation, watch your throat for symptoms of vocal abuse.

Instructions

    • 1

Pay attention to the state of your voice when you finish singing. Speak in a normal tone. If your voice sounds or feels hoarse, this is a sign of strain and you should begin to rest your voice.

    • 2

Sing a warm up song and note how well your voice hits the high points. Consistent difficulty singing high notes you are accustomed to indicates signs of fatigue.

    • 3

Touch your throat and check for tenderness. A voice that has experienced overuse or abuse will swell and feel sore.

    • 4

Watch for a itching sensation in your throat and excessive dryness. This is a sign of a poorly hydrated throat. Treat this by consuming fluids and taking a break from singing until your voice feels better.
