Country Couple Dance Steps

Country dance for couples is a form of social dance mostly performed to country-western music. Country dance features various dances such as the Two Step, the Promenade, the Waltz and the Polka. The man usually leads in these country dances by taking long strides and gently pushing or pulling his partner. He can choose to change direction in the dance at any given time.
  1. The Two Step

    • The Two Step is sometimes referred to as the "Texas Two Step." The dance moves counterclockwise around the space or stage. The Texas Two Step features a quick step, another quick step and a slow step. If you're leading, step on your left foot while lifting your right heel as the first step. You might hear the phrase: "Step-together, walk and walk." Place your right hand on your partner's left shoulder and then your left arm over your partner's right arm while clasping hands. The idea is to appear to glide to the rhythm of the music.

    The Promenade

    • The Promenade dance involves dancing side by side. If you're the man, you'll be on the left and the woman will be on the right. Execute the steps at the same time, so there is no leader and follower. The Promenade style can be done to various country and western songs that may be slow or uptempo.

    The Polka

    • The Polka is a popular country and western dance that is often performed competitively (often in central Texas, though the dance originated in Czechoslovakia). Polka, which means "half-step," is a lively dance. The movement is like a fast waltz in 6/8 time that requires a quick shift from one foot to the other. Standing face to face with the man's arm around the woman's waist and the woman's hand on his shoulder, place your weight on your right foot, hop, step forward with your left, close the right foot to the left and place weight back on to right foot. Hold the beat while maintaining the weight on the left foot and execute the series of steps again using the opposite foot. Move any direction you wish, such as left and right or forwards and backwards.
