How to Dance With Glow Sticks

The rave music scene brought many innovations in style, fashion and music into popular culture. One of the most recognizable and fun offshoots of the rave experience is glow-stick dancing. Easy to learn and as complex as you want it to be, dancing with a glow-stick isn't just for the rave crowd, but can be a fun pastime for all ages. Glow-stick dancing can be done in a group or solo, for exercise or to pass the time. One of the great things about glow-stick dancing is that it is largely interpretive. What matters most is that you are enjoying yourself. For serious practitioners, there are expert glow-stick dancing groups and sites that create glow-stick dancing events, films and offer advanced tutorials.

Instructions

  1. Basic Glow-Stick Dancing

    • 1

Bend your glow-sticks to release the chemicals that make them glow. Turn off the lights. Turn on the music. Feel the beat.

    • 2

Hold a glow-stick in each hand and wave your arms to the beat.

    • 3

Wave your arms in a figure eight pattern.

    • 4

Spin your body with your arms outstretched, holding a glow-stick in each hand.

    • 5

Wave the glow-sticks as if directing traffic. Spin one glow-stick over your head in a circular motion while waving the other in front of your face like a windshield wiper.

    Glow-Stick on a String Dance

    • 6

Affix a length of string to the end of your glow-stick. Do not attempt this unless your glow-stick has a hole through which you can tie the string and knot it securely.

    • 7

As the music starts spin the glow-stick in a circular motion at the end of the string.

    • 8

As you spin the glow-stick, switch the string to your other hand.

    • 9

Let the string wrap around your forearm and reel the glow-stick in like a yo-yo.

    • 10

Repeat with two glow-sticks for double the effect.

    Synchronized Glow-Stick Dancing

    • 11

Hand a friend two glow-sticks (either on a string or off).

    • 12

Spin your glow-stick in unison with your partner.

    • 13

Stand back to back with your partner as you spin your glow-sticks.

    • 14

Gather as many friends as you can and repeat.

    • 15

If you gather enough friends (or willing strangers) you can make a glow-stick train.
