Purchase the Grease DVD and put it into your DVD player. Cue the movie to the Greased Lightening scene and pause the movie at the beginning of the scene. There is some talking before the dance starts which will give you some time to get into place once you press play. Clear a space in front of the television set that gives you plenty of room to dance. Using a remote will keep you from having to walk back and forth to the television set.
Invite a group of friends over as this is a group dance. Assign a role to each friend, and have each person watch their own assigned actor to learn that part. Some sections of the dance are done in unison, but there are many sections where each person is doing their own choreography. Watch the scene all the way through a few times before attempting to follow the movement. This will give you a sense of the overall structure and order of the dance.
Learn the unison sections first. These sections are the most structured of the whole dance and will give the group a sense of accomplishment as everyone is dancing the steps together. Learn one section of the song at a time. Watch the section, stop the video and try the steps. Rewind and watch the steps again after you have tried it. You may do this a number of times before you have mastered the section.
Add some of your own choreography to the portions of the dance where there are close ups on one actor and you cannot see what the rest of the group is doing. Use movements that are used in other parts of the dance to keep the style the same throughout.
Dress either in the typical Thunderbird garb or the mechanics coveralls to perform the dance. Danny and Kinnicky wear all black with jeans, a t-shirt and a leather jacket. The rest of the ensemble is dressed in the a t-shirt and coveralls.
