How to Learn the Footloose Dance

The iconic dance Kevin Bacon did in the "Footloose" warehouse scene has an infectious energy that makes it really fun. It also involves a number of moves that can make it tough to master. In order to successfully perform this dance routine, you first have to learn each of the dance moves, and then you have to remember the exact order in which to do them. With a little dedication, however, you can learn the "Footloose" dance and be on the floor more quickly than you might imagine.

      Watch the "Footloose" movie several times and pay careful attention to Kevin Bacon's moves. This 1984 film stars Kevin Bacon as a rebel who is new to a town that has banned dancing and rock and roll. The much-loved dance scene takes place in a warehouse to the film's theme song, recorded by Kenny Loggins. (See Resources for a direct link to listen to the song.)

      Call a few local dance studios and ask them if they offer lessons for the "Footloose" dance. If you can not afford this option, ask if you can just watch a lesson to get some tips. Watch the lead dancers very closely.

      Practice the moves, one at a time, until you master them. Once you master a move then move to the next one. Memorize the sequence of the steps and how they synchronize with the music.

      Rent or buy a DVD that teaches the "Footloose" steps. There are very specific moves for this particular dance.
