How to Learn the Bhangra Dance

Bhangra is an ancient Indian dance tradition from the Punjab region, dating back about 700 years. Over time, the dance has spread from Punjab to other South Asian areas, and bhangra is often performed at weddings and celebration. If you're fortunate to live in an area with a large Indian population, you should not have trouble finding an Indian dance school with bhangra classes. But no matter where you live, there are many ways to learn bhangra moves.

Instructions

    • 1

Look for Indian dance schools near your community at Garam Chai (see Resources). They list schools and private dance teachers for all types of Indian dancing, including bhangra. Sign up for bhangra classes offered near you to learn from a professional. This gives you the most comprehensive instruction, but may not be available to everyone.

Check adult education centers near you for additional bhangra dance class listings. Since adult education centers offer periodic, not ongoing, classes, they won't be listed at Garam Chai. Sign up for bhangra classes you find offers through your local adult education center.

Watch bhangra videos on YouTube, suggests Desi Hits. If you're looking for an overview of bhangra moves, whether you're new to the dance or brushing up on techniques, watching videos will get you up to speed on bhangra movements and hits. Watching videos can also help reinforce movements you learn in class. Desi Hits suggests searching YouTube for "bhangra competition" or "bhangra team" to get good results.
