How to Dance the Cowboy Cha-Cha

Country dance, identified by the feet gliding across the floor with a quiet upper body, is danced all over the world. Its simplicity and variety of dances makes it accessible to everyone, whether you are dancing alone, with a partner or in a group. The Cowboy Cha-Cha, sometimes known as the Traveling Cha-Cha, is a country partner dance that moves around the dance floor in a counterclockwise direction. The step-by-step instructions are for both dancers unless noted.

Instructions

  1. Rock Step (Basic Step)

    • 1

Stand side by side with your partner with your right shoulder touching your partner's left shoulder. Place your right arm behind your partner's back and hold right hands. Have you partner put her left arm across your chest and hold left hands. Step forward with your left foot, then back with your right. Allow your body weight to move over the foot you are stepping onto, almost like a rocking motion. This is often cued as "rock forward, back" (count "one, two").

    • 2

Step back with your left foot, step in place with your right and step in place with your left in a quick-time rhythm (count "three-and-four" or "left-right-left"). This is the cha-cha and is often cued as "cha-cha-cha" to keep time with the rhythm.

    • 3

Step back with your right foot, then forward with your left, remembering to transfer your body weight as you step. This is cued as "rock back, forward" (count "one, two").

    • 4

Cha-cha, beginning by putting your right foot forward (count "three-and-four" or "right-left-right").

    • 5

Repeat steps one and two (count "one, two, three-and-four").

    • 6

Step back with your right foot, then forward with your left. As you step forward, raise right arms, still clasping your partner's hand, in preparation for the turn step (count "one, two").

    • 7

Cha-cha, stepping forward with your right foot and turning your partner with your right arm. During the cha-cha, your partner turns 180 degrees to face you. At the end of the cha-cha, your arms will be crossed in front of you and you will be facing your partner (count "three-and-four" or "right-left-right").

    Turn Step
