Decide on where you want the tassel belt to sit on your body. Most peope choose to create a belt that will hang low off their hips, but some women prefer belts that sit a little higher. This is typically matter of preference and comfort.
Measure around your body according to where you want your belt to hang with your measuring tape. Add fourteen inches to this measurement.
Draw an inverted triangle on your pattern paper, using the measurement that you have just calculated for the horizontal side on the top. The point of the triangle will be the lowest point your belt, so think about how far you want the belt to hang down. Most tassel belts will hang down to mid-thigh, though others will hang down to the knee or even lower.
Cut out your paper pattern.
Choose your fabric. Because your fabric is going to be carrying a lot of weight in the form of the tassels, you will want to choose something that is fairly study. One great place to look for fabric with wonderful designs and color is going to be the upholstery section of your local fabric store.
Lay your pattern on top of your fabric and cut it out.
Finish your fabric either by rolling up the hem and stitching it flat, or by edging the triangle with a narrow strip of identical fabric. This will ensure that the belt does not fray and it will add some strength to the structure of your belt.
Try on your belt. The two longest ends of the triangle will be tied in front of you, leaving the ends dangling down.
Measure three inches to either side of the knot, and mark those two spots with chalk. The area enclosed by these two marks will not have tassels dangling from them.
Take off your tassel belt.
Decide how you want to arrange your tassels on the belt itself. One popular design is set a short row of tassels along the bottom hem of your belt, and another row going around the waist. Another possibility is to simply have a few, very long tassels attached only to the bottom edge of the belt.
Stitch your tassels to your belt. Remember that tassels tend to be heavy, so attach them securely.
