Goth Clubs in Upstate New York

Contrary to stereotypes, the Goth lifestyle entails more than wearing pale makeup or dark clothes. Rather, it is a unique and intricate subculture all its own. However, trying to find Goth venues and clubs outside of a major city can prove challenging---but not impossible. In upstate New York, though sparse, a few Goth clubs enjoy large followings and actively attempt to cultivate niches for an otherwise marginalized subculture.

  1. Club Vertex

    • Located in Rochester, New York, Vertex has enjoyed a reputation as Rochester's exclusive Goth club for more than 10 years. As of 2010 it is only open after 10:00 PM, and it frequently hosts DJs who specialize in Industrial and Dark Goth music, and it regularly features guest DJs as well. Covers range from $8 for patrons ages 18 to 20 and $3 for those over 21. Featuring a decent bar and a dark, industrial interior, it continues to attract a group of regular customers from Rochester and the surrounding area.     Alien-Nation at The Fuze Box

    • Alien-Nation at The Fuze Box is a monthly dance night in Albany, New York, hosted on the first Friday of each month, from 10:00 PM to 4:00 AM. Open to patrons ages 18 and older, these nights require a $3 cover and feature a bar, outdoor seating and plenty of parking both on the street and in the lot. A popular event since 2006, Alien-Nation changed venues a few times before finally finding its home at The Fuze Box, a club that features an ambient interior where kitschy details fuse with industrial accents. Alien-Nation hosts DJs who play a variety of genres, ranging from Industrial to Goth Rock to Darkwave. Be forewarned, however, that as of 2010 the club accepts cash only.     :BINARY: at The Haunt

    • Every Sunday, The Haunt, a nightclub in Ithaca, New York, hosts :BINARY:, a night of dancing hosted by DJ Law, who plays a variety of tracks ranging from Industrial to Goth. Requiring a $3 cover fee in 2010, the weekly gathering begins at 10:00 PM, and often features guest DJs. In addition to its full bar and live music, The Haunt offers food from RazorBack BBQ. Frequently attracting large crowds of patrons, the club's atmosphere is energetic, filled with eclectic industrial decor including red ambient lighting, a vintage chandelier, a working traffic light and a wall of road signs.
