Dance Steps for the Virginia Reel

Despite being called the Virginia Reel, this dance did not originate in Virginia. The dance, according to Street Swing, originated in ancient Ireland and was called the Rinnce Fadha; it became the popular Sir Roger de Coverly or Overly dance in England. It was not until the dance reached America that it became the Virginia Reel. The Virginia Reel is a fun, lively dance that will feel familiar to anyone who has done square dancing.
  1. Walk

    • The walk is a traveling step in the Virginia Reel. The walk is similar to the one you do naturally, except that the steps are smoother and more rhythmic.

    Sashay or Chasse

    • The sashay or chasse (chase in French) is a step found in ballet and French dances. To do this step, move your left foot to the side and follow or chase it with your right, ending with your right foot beside your left. You can do this in the other direction as well, starting with your right foot and chasing with your left.

    Skip

    • The skip is something you probably did as a child. Hop and shuffle forward with your right foot, then do the same with your left. The rhythm will be: da-da, da-da, da-da, da-da.

    Forward and Back

    • This is a step that repeats. Men and women stand in lines facing each other. Each line steps forward three steps, taps the floor with their free foot, then steps back and taps the floor. It will go like this: one-two-three-tap; back, two, three, tap.

    Elbow Swings

    • The man and woman link their right arms at the elbows and walk around each other in a circle, taking eight steps. Once they take the eighth step, the man and woman link their left elbows and circle around in the other direction, taking eight more steps.

    Two Hand Swing

    • The man and the woman join hands and walk around in a circle until they return to the point at which they began, with the man on the men's side of the room and the woman on the women's side.

    Do Si Do

    • Without turning, the man and the woman walk toward the center of the room, move around each other, then return to their lines by walking backward.

    Sashay Down and Back

    • This step begins with the man and woman who stand at the head of the line. The man and woman come forward to the center of the room and join hands, sashaying down the line eight steps, then sashaying eight steps back to the head of the line.

    Elbow Reel

    • The man and woman at the head of the line come together in the center of the room, link right elbows, and make one full turn. The couple separate, and the man goes to the next woman in the line while the woman goes to the next man. They join right elbows with their new partners, make a complete circle, then return to the middle and circle with each other again. The men and women continue this pattern until they reach the bottom of the line. Once there, they join hands and sashay to the top again.

    Bridge

    • The head man goes behind the man's line to the end, while the head woman does the same. The other men follow the head man, while the women follow the head woman. When the head man and woman reach the bottom, they go into the middle and join hands, raising them until their joined hands form a bridge. The next man and woman join hands and pass through the bridge, then raise their joined hands. Each couple continues the process until the couple who were at the foot of the line are at the head. The steps of the Virginia Reel repeat until the couple who began at the head of the line end up there again.
