"Give weight" to your movement. The concept of "giving weight" means to not only give weight to your bearing but also to lend support to your dance partner. It is a difficult step to master, but one that is essential to learn early on so you can take note of your bearing while you are learning other steps.
Incoporate long, relaxed arms into your dancing. ECD requires graceful arms to execute the moving patterns of dancers and stay connected with your partner. Arms that are too tight will appear tense and throw a partner off balance.
Hold hands gently, without the thumb touching your partner's hand. You may let go of your partner's hand as you navigate your way through a pattern. Keep your grip gentle when you find it again.
Practice proper posture. Good posture will ensure that your weight is properly centered. You may practice improving your posture by sitting upright in a chair without resting your back against the back of the chair. Bend forward from the waist until your head is hanging between your knees. Relax your head, neck and spine. Slowly come back to the upright position by "stacking" your vertebrae one at a time. It is helpful to do this is front of a mirror so you are able to correct any postural imbalances.
Sign up for a class. ECD is best learned with a live instructor who will give you individual attention. An ECD class will teach you specific steps for various types of ECD dances and help you attain the grace and confidence of a Regency gentleman or lady.
