How to Learn English Country Dances for Free

An ancestral counterpart to North American square dancing, English country dancing, sometimes referred to as ECD, has a long and stately history beginning with John Playford's publication in 1651 of the dance steps in his masterpiece, The English Dancing Master. English country dancing is typically slow and regal, requiring only moderate physical exertion, and a caller directs the movements of the dance, so there is no need to rely on memory to guide your steps. Indeed, the most difficult part about learning English country dances may be finding someone to teach you. Luckily, there are many online resources available completely free of charge. If you are an independent learner, then this is the gig for you!

Watch it in action. There are many theatrical renderings of English country dancing, the most popular of which is undoubtedly the 2005 film adaptation of Jane Austen's novel Pride and Prejudice. You can see clips of the dance scene on YouTube, as well as many other examples online.

Learn the dance steps. While it is true that the caller will remind you of what step comes next, you will need to know what she means by a "half figure 8," or a "crossover hey," for instance. You can read about these and other steps online or by viewing an interactive tutorial such as the one available here. (See References)
