How to Learn a Cheerleading Dance

Dancing is an integral part of a cheerleading routine that can earn or lose points during a competition as well as entertain crowds during games and pep rallies. Cheerleading dances can include elements of hip hop, ballet and jazz dancing, and lessons in any or all of these styles can be beneficial. Typically, a team's captain, coach and/or choreographer will help develop and teach the routine.

Instructions

    • 1

Warm up and stretch before learning any routines to help to avoid any injuries or pulled muscles. Drink water. Learn and practice the steps in front of a mirror so you can perfect the movements.

    • 2

Learn to count music. Music and step combinations are typically in sets of eight counts. Counting will help you stay on time with the music and showcase your musicality.

    • 3

Learn the steps slowly and without music at first so you can learn the motions. Learn the routine in increments of eight or 16 counts at a time. When you add more counts, go through the routine from the beginning to ensure you don't forget the steps you've already learned. Add music once you are comfortable with each step combination.

    • 4

Don't perform all the stunts every time while learning the routine. Try the stunt once with the music, then mark it the next few times by pausing for the counts it takes to do the stunt.

    • 5

Use sharp motions such as straight arms, punches and quick head movements. The key to an impressive, high-caliber routine is the synchronicity of the movements between dancers. Heads, feet and arms should move as one within the group. Hands are typically in fists or flexed with flat palms.

    • 6

Perform the routine with the music and all stunts without the mirror once the steps are mastered until you become completely comfortable with the routine.
