It is not uncommon for children to start ballet classes at as young as 3 years old. Ballet teaches a child to have good posture and offers many health benefits. Children can form strong friendships through ballet classes and, if they enjoy it, they can go on to train in "pointe" (pointe shoes are the traditional ballet slippers that are seen in ballets). This typically takes place around 11 years old, after a child has been training in ballet for a few years and her leg muscles, ankles and posture are strong.
Children enjoy tap dancing because they like to hear the noise their tap shoes make. Tap classes are offered in dance studios across the country and in some YMCA locations. Children can start tap dancing at around 4 years old. Many dance studios have recitals which encourage self esteem.
Jazz dance classes encompass some aspects of ballet, but they bring in individual style, twists and very energetic movements. Typically, children take ballet classes for a few years before starting jazz classes. Ankles should be strong before starting jazz classes because leaps are executed and movements are faster and stronger than in beginner ballet. A background in ballet helps with the balance required for jazz dance.
Many community theaters offer children's roles in plays. Churches, some YMCA locations, and schools may also offer opportunities to partake in drama classes. Drama classes can encourage creative and critical thinking skills because many incorporate "improv" where a child must quickly and creatively make up a scene with other students in the class. This can provide a lot of fun, laughter, and bonding with friends while a child learns acting skills at the same time.
