Dance schools are a traditional way of leaning dance. Many dance schools teach a variety of genres including hip-hop. Some provide the chance to join performance troupes, which participate in competitions. Lessons at a dance school are typically taught in a group environment and are carried out over a set amount of time. Dance schools also offer camps, which take place over a shorter period such as one day, one weekend or a week.
Gyms are another place where hip-hop dance is taught, though usually with more of a fitness slant than at a dance school. Beginners may find the gym environment less intimidating than a dance school. Another aspect of taking a class at a gym is that you may be required to become a gym member and pay membership fees for use of the facility. You may also have to undergo a gym orientation, to check your fitness level, before you can start a class.
Private lessons are good for students who learn better in a one-on-one environment. They can also be beneficial for people who are too shy to dance in front of a group. Private lessons are also helpful, in that they allow the instructor to personally assess your skill level and work with you on any problem areas. Private instructors can also work closely with you to help you meet your goals. Some schools and gyms offer private lessons by appointment.
Virtual hip-hop lessons on DVD or online are another way to learn privately. This form of learning can be useful for beginners who want to be able to replay lessons and steps repeatedly until they get them down. This is also a convenient way to learn in your own home, on your own time. Virtual lessons are especially helpful to those who live in areas where hip-hop classes aren't offered.
In each hip-hop lesson, you will generally learn one dance routine, usually consisting of 32 beats. The choreography will be divided into four sections with eight beats in a section. You'll be taught one eight-count of dance and repeat it a few times before moving on to the next section. Eventually the four sections will be put together and you'll dance the full routine. Routines vary based on the instructor and can include anything from the latest dance craze to specific styles within the genre such as funk, breaking, and popping and locking, and moves such as the glide, harlem shake, moonwalk, etc.
