How to Do the Statue Dance

The Statue Dance is an interactive class exercise, designed to develop a dancer's creativity, improvisational skill and spatial awareness. This free-form activity benefits dancers of all ages. Beginning dancers learn to explore space, differentiate body parts and keep simple rhythm. While more experienced dancers learn to expand their range of motion, improve articulation and express ideas through movement.

Instructions

    • 1

Divide dancers into the following two groups: statues and dancers.

    • 2

Instruct statues to find their own space on the dance floor and create a pose. Dancers should stand to the side of the room.

    • 3

Tell dancers to choose a statue. When the music begins, each dancer must dance to her statue. She may move as fluidly or mechanically as she desires.

    • 4
Poses must be complimentary and connected.

Explain that once a dancer reaches her statue, she must create her own pose. It should be complementary to the statue's pose, forming a complete picture. At least one part of the dancer's body must touch the statue.

    • 5

Direct each statue to "come to life" when he feels a dancer touch him. The statue then becomes the dancer and searches for a new statue to pose with.

    • 6

Instruct groups to continue alternating between statue and dancer for the duration of the music.
