How to Dance Like a Go-Go Dancer

Go-Go dancing originated in the 1960s in the Peppermint Lounge in New York. The dance style originated when a few women climbed onto tables to dance and entertain the crowds. Go-Go dancing today is found in many nightclubs, particularly places with a discotheque feel. Go-Go dancing employs a number of early dance steps and the dancers typically wear fringe skirts and leather Go-Go boots. By learning the basic movements of Go-Go dancing, you can help keep this classic dance style alive.

Dress the part. Go-Go dancers typically wear a tube top or t-shirt, leather vest, fringe skirt and high leather boots. Some may even wear a cowgirl hat. Wear colorful, glittery clothes and apply your make-up heavier than usual so you will stand out in a crowd. This is part of the Go-Go dancing presentation.

Move your hips. Go-Go dancers dance to energetic music. One of the key movements of a Go-Go dance is the back and forth pelvic thrust, often done so quickly that the hips become a blur. Practice this move until you can do it fast and smooth. A beginner may have a tendency to jerk the hips, which should be avoided. Start slow and work your way up to speed.

Use your arms. Go-Go dancers employ arm movement throughout the entire dance. Bend your elbows and move your arms up and down in time with the music. Alternate so that one hand is going up while the other comes down. The arms should be moving slower than the hips, creating the illusion that the arms are moving in slow motion compared to the pelvic thrusts.

Shake your head. This is the third element of a Go-Go dance routine. Shake your head side to side as you dance. Let the rhythm of the music dictate the speed or intensity with which you move your head, but never keep the head still. A Go-Go dance employs all three of these movements at all times during a dance routine.
