Dialysis Technician Job Requirements

A dialysis or hemodialysis machine technician is someone who operates a dialysis machine. They are responsible for sterilizing solutions, operating the equipment, monitoring the patient, and acting accordingly in an emergency situations. Dialysis machine technicians must have a high school diploma or GED, and can have two or four year college degrees, backgrounds in electrical engineering, biomedical engineering, and EMT and CNA training.
  1. Education

    • Students entering the field usually try for two and four year degree programs; this gives them further training on the operation of the machine and monitoring procedures.

    Electronics

    • In order to use the dialysis machine, knowledge of electronics is important. Technicians are required to know how to set up, operate and maintain their dialysis machines.

    Biomedical

    • Understanding the human body is crucial. Technicians will be required to take blood and record blood pressure, monitor the patient's vitals and properly sterilize the machine before and after use.

    BMET

    • Biomedical equipment technicians are a class of technicians with electrical and medical backgrounds that operate various medical instruments, including dialysis machines.

    Certification

    • Some hospitals, clinics, and states require additional knowledge; being a certified nursing assisnant (CNA) and having prior EMT Technician training can help improve your standing.
