For PC users, the Virtual DJ software requires an Intel Pentium 4 or AMD Athlon XP processor, 512MB of RAM, a DirectX-compatible sound card, an SVGA video card capable of 1024x768 resolution and 20MB of physical hard drive space for installation. For Mac users, Virtual DJ requires at minimum an Intel processor, Mac OS X v10.5 (Leopard), a CoreAudio-compatible sound card, an SVGA video card capable of 1024x768 resolution, 1024MB of RAM and 30MB of hard drive space.
An external sound card allows you to hear the track playing on the second virtual "turntable" while the first turntable's sound is being sent to the speakers. This is important for beat-matching and ensuring that the new track starts at the right place.
Headphones, in conjunction with the external sound card, let you hear the audio from the second "turntable" separately from the music that the audience is listening to.
A great collection of music is important for any DJ. A major advantage of digital DJing is that all music can be stored on a laptop, eliminating the need to carry cases full of CDs or vinyl records.
Laptop DJs are spoiled for choice when deciding how to control their music. The Virtual DJ "turntables" can be controlled with a laptop's trackpad and keyboard or with an external, dedicated controller such as the Hercules RMX DJ Console. Alternatively, control Virtual DJ with specialized signal disks that sit on physical turntables. Cross-fade with either the virtual mixer in Virtual DJ or a physical mixer linked to the software.
