How to Do Dance Returns

Dance return steps are steps that allow the dancer to return to her place in line or to a certain spot on the stage. They also allow the dancer to reset, regain proper footing if she was left in an awkward stance from the previous step combination or reset her balance. The steps are generally simple and basic, such as the ones initially taught to beginner dancers. However, they are very necessary even for an advanced dancer, as they allow for the seamless transition from one move to another.

Instructions

  1. Bourrees

    • 1

Stand facing a mirror with your feet shoulder-width apart and your arms loose at your sides.

    • 2

Raise your feet to the releve, which means you are balancing on the balls of your feet and toes with your heels raised off the floor.

    • 3

Step the right foot in front of you, putting your weight on it and lifting the left foot behind you off the floor.

    • 4

Step the left foot in behind the right heel, rocking your weight back to the left foot and raising the right off the floor. Legs should remain straight at all times.

    • 5

Step the right foot forward again, quickly stepping the left foot in behind the heel to meet it. Repeat this sequence moving forward, backwards or turning in a circle, depending on the dance.

    Pas de Bourrees

    • 6

Stand facing the mirror with your feet shoulder-width apart. Raise your feet to the releve position.

    • 7

Shift your weight to the left foot and step your right foot diagonally behind you and to the outside left of the left foot. The left knee plies, or bends slightly to the front as you do this. Shift your weight to the right foot as you touch it to the ground.

    • 8

Step the left foot out to the left side so your feet are shoulder-width apart again. Your knees should be pressed straight and your feet in releve.

    • 9

Shift your weight to the left foot and step your right foot in front of the left, stepping through the toe so the foot is flat on the ground and not in releve. Bend the right knee in a plie with all your weight resting on it. Bend your left leg at the knee behind the right knee and towards the left corner of the room, with the left foot raised slightly off the floor and the toes pointed towards the ground.

    • 10

Repeat the step sequence from this finishing position in the opposite direction by stepping the raised left foot back behind you, placing the right foot down beside it, then stepping forward with the left foot, planting it on the ground in a plie and raising the right foot behind it off the ground.
