How to Do a Great Fouette Turn

Fouette turns are one of the most demanding turns in the classical ballet repertoire. Beginning them without proper practice and training is not advised. However, for the experienced student, a perfectly executed fouette turn or a series of fouette turns can be very rewarding and impressive. Prior to practicing fouette turns, you should be able to execute a pirouette without difficulty.

Instructions

    • 1

Begin at the barre, passe en pointe. Extend your leg forward and execute a ron de jambe, extending your leg to the side and ending back en passe. This is the essential fouette motion.

    • 2

Add the turn once you have mastered the basic fouette motion. Repeat Step 1, but as you execute the ron de jambe, execute a pirouette. End passe en pointe.

    • 3

Move to the floor and begin with a pirouette. As you complete your turn, extend your leg and execute your ron de jambe. The motion of the ron de jambe will propel you through another rotation. When you complete the rotation, you have completed one fouette.

    • 4

Repeat the process to complete a series of fouette turns.
