How to Write a Dinka Poem

Dinka poetry is written to express love through words. The Dinka live in the Republic of Sudan, and make up one of the the largest populations in southern Sudan. Their original poetic style consists of a simple style that offers an effective way to express your feelings and let your creativity soar.

Instructions

Familiarize yourself with the Dinka structure. There are generally two stanzas in a Dinka poem. The first stanza is traditionally twice as long as the second. For example, if the first stanza consists of eight lines, the second will only consist of four. If the first consists of six lines, the second will only have three.

Let love inspire you. Think about something you love, something you value greatly and make this your inspiration. This can range from a family pet, such as a dog or a hamster, to a piece of jewelry left to you by a loved one. Focus on what you have chosen; if you're writing about your dog, think about the way your pet makes you feel, why you love it, its personality quirks and what you would do for it.

Write your first stanza. Think of your loved one, focusing on the features that stand out for you, and describe him in detail, using similes and metaphors. Remember that a simile is a comparison between two things using the word "like," and a metaphor directly compares two things without "like" or "as." For example, if you want to write about your dog, your first line might be, "My dog's fur is black like the darkest night" and the second line could be, "His teeth are white summer clouds." If you choose to include eight lines in this stanza, prepare eight similar comparisons.

Write your second stanza. In the second stanza, switch to first person and explain how you are prepared to look after and care for your loved one. Add emphasis with strong verbs like "walk" and "shout" and avoid weak, static verbs like "care" and "need." While weak verbs might show emotion, they don't say specifically what you will do for your loved one. For example, the first line of your second stanza might be, "I will walk with him for three hours along the riverbank," and the second, "I will protect him with all my power."
