How to Write a 60 Line Poem

Writing poetry is a great way to ease tension and express yourself artistically. There are many different types of poetry which vary in form, style and rhythm, such as limericks, haiku and sonnets. However, more so than other literary forms, poetry is rarely constrained to the limitations of one category or type. For inspiration consider turning to nature, your daily life or visual art. Avoid seeking inspiration from existing poems and famous poets as this can restrict your view and change your artistic voice.

Instructions

    • 1

Write the numbers 1 through 60 vertically, along the left margin; if the page is lined, assign one number to each line; if the page is not lined, space the numbers evenly.

    • 2

Select a theme or inspiration for the poem (e.g., my mother, love, summer squash). Title the poem accordingly; write the title at the top of the page above line 1.

    • 3

Introduce the subject of the poem or set the scene in the first few lines. Use character spacing, indentation, punctuation, paragraph spacing and distinctive fonts to emphasize the words themselves (e.g., Tick-tock. Tick. Tock. TICK! TOCK! -- the clock). Use imagery, rhythm and meter to create mood and convey a distinctive voice.

    • 4

Continue until a complete thought or scene has been expressed. Draw a horizontal line underneath the last line written to mark the end of the stanza.

    • 5

Begin the next stanza with a new, but related thought.

    • 6

Repeat until all 60 lines have been completed.

    • 7

Review the poem. Replace words, rephrase sections and correct errors in spelling and grammar. Maintain a copy of the original copy to preserve the editorial process and prevent the loss of your work.
