The Queensland government funds the career development of artists domestically and internationally. The state arts agency, Arts Queensland, oversees the Career Development Grants program. Artists receive up to $5,000 AUD for projects that enhance their craft. The average grant awarded in 2009 was $2,564. Applicants must be residents of Queensland and Australian citizens or permanent residents. A detailed budget and a curriculum vitae must be included with the application.

The Australian Society of Authors supports the creation of new works with its Emerging Writers grant. Artists can use the award for living expenses, child care, research costs and travel expenses during the time they are working on a new project. Eligible works include fiction, literary non-fiction, poetry, theater and radio scripts, and new media works with a literary component. Applicants can apply for grants in the amounts of $5,000, $10,000 or $15,000 AUD. Australian citizenship or permanent resident status is required.

The ArtStart Grant targets artists, including writers, who are recent graduates. The award is sponsored by the Australia Council for the Arts. The purpose of the grant is to help artists establish their career by providing funds for them to obtain equipment, skills development services and other creative necessities. Applicants must submit a career plan, provide proof of an arts education and include supportive testimonials from references along with their application. There is no age limit for the grant. The maximum amount of the award is $10,000 AUD.
