What is a shakespearean sprite?

In Shakespeare's works, a sprite is a mischievous or playful fairy-like creature.

In A Midsummer Night's Dream, Queen Titania refers to her attendant fairies as "fair elves and fairies, and you, the

merry wanderer of the night, you, the little mushroom man, you the p

eelbottom; and you that skip where the moon comes; and you that follow the Sun, doing homage to his golden rays..."

In The Tempest, Ariel is a "tricksy spirit," and his fellow spirits in the play help summon storms and create illusions.

Pack, Puck, or Robin Goodfellow, in A Midsummer Night's Dream, is considered the most prominent sprite in Shakespeare's works. He's a mischievous and magical creature who loves to mess around with humans and fairies alike.
