How to Place a Book Title & Year With No Author in APA or MLA Format

When presenting your research, you must cite your sources to credit the ideas and text of others. Properly citing your sources gives your research more credibility and helps you avoid potential accusations of plagiarism. The Modern Language Association (MLA) and American Psychological Association (APA) styles of citation are the two most common forms. MLA style is usually used when writing about subjects in the humanities and APA style is standard for the social and behavioral sciences. However, even once you get used to citing works with a particular style, you may come across a stumbling block, such as what to do when a book has no author.

Instructions

    • 1

Credit the editor if the book has no clear author. Look on the title page or the book jacket for this name. Cite the editor's name in place of the author's name for either MLA or APA style, followed by the book title. For MLA style, list the editor's last name followed by a comma and then list the first name followed by a comma and the abbreviation for editor (ed) followed by a period. For example: Smith, Joe, ed. For APA style, list the editor's last name followed by a comma and then his first initial followed by a period. Follow this with "Ed." in parentheses and then place another period. For example: Smith, J. (Ed.).

    • 2

Start with the book title if there is no author or editor for either MLA or APA style. Continue with the rest of the citation in the same order as when you do have an author. For MLA style, this order would be: Italicized or Underlined Title. City of Publication: Publishing Company Name, Year of Publication. Form of Publication, for example: Anonymous Book. New York: Jane Doe Publishing, 2010. Print. For APA style, this order would be: Italicized or Underlined Title. (Year of Publication). City of Publication: Publishing Company Name. For example: Anonymous Book. (2010). New York: Jane Doe Publishing.

    • 3

List the citation in the works cited page according to the first word in the title for either style format. In the example of the book entitled "Anonymous Book," the citation would be listed alphabetically among the A's.

    • 4

Write an in-text citation in the MLA style for a book with no author by listing the full title (italicized or underlined) followed by the page number, all in parentheses. For example: (Anonymous Book 122). Write an in-text citation in the APA style for a book with no author by listing the full title (italicized or underlined) followed by a comma and the date of publication, all in parentheses. For example: (Anonymous Book, 2010).
