How to Punctuate a Book Title

Once you've finished your manuscript -- or maybe just heading up the page where you'll start your book -- it's time to assign a title. Book titles are punctuated differently than an average sentence. More capital letters not only show that it's a title, but it also helps make an impact on the reader. Don't let your title look like just another sentence in a book. Give it the power it deserves with proper punctuation. Proper title punctuation is also essential when creating a reference list.

Instructions

    • 1

Check to make sure all words of more than three letters are capitalized, excluding smaller words such as "and, in, or, of or the."

    • 2

Check the first word of the title. The word should be capitalized no matter what it is.

    • 3

Check for punctuation in the title. Usually, unless there's a quote, there will not be any ending punctuation in a book title.

    • 4

Make sure all apostrophes are placed appropriately.

    • 5

Italicize the book title if you are adding it to a reference list or works cited page. Leave it in regular text if you're creating a book title for a manuscript you have written.
