How to Cite MLA Book Titles

Modern Language Association Style, or MLA Style, is a set of guidelines for formatting academic papers. Examples of MLA guidelines include the correct citation of sources while writing an academic paper. The specific format for citing sources of information in MLA Style depends on what type of source you are citing. When referencing printed books, your citation should appear in a certain format.

Instructions

    • 1

List the name of the author, last name first. For example:

      Smith, John.

If there is more than one author, list the names in the following format:

      Smith, John, and Tim Jones.

Smith, John, Tim Jones, and James Johnson.

If there is no author, skip this step.

    • 2

List the title of the book in italics, followed by a period. Write the title in title case; that is, capitalize the first letter of each word in the title.

    • 3

List the city in which the book was published, followed by a colon.

    • 4

List the name of the publisher, followed by a comma.

    • 5

List the year in which the book was published, followed by a period.

    • 6

List the medium of publication, followed by a period. When citing a book, the medium of publication should appear as follows:

      Print.

    • 7

Make sure that the citation appears as follows, and that the book title is italicized.
