Load the audio book into the listening device. For instance, put the first tape or CD into the tape/CD player. If you are using an MP3 player and the book is not preloaded, use a computer to load the audio book MP3 file onto the MP3 player.
Plug earphones or speakers into the listening device if there are no speakers built into it. If you have MP3 files on a computer that has its own speakers you can use the computer to listen to the audio book.
Open the text version of the audio book to the appropriate page if you want to read along with the audio book while it plays. For some people reading the text while listening to the audio can be a learning aid. However, listening to the audio book by itself can also be effective and enjoyable.
Press "play" on the listening device and follow along in the text if you are using one. If you loose your place in the text you can rewind the audio book and start over.
Pause the audio book occasionally to take notes on important things you hear. If you are listening for pleasure you could do other things while you listen, such as clean, work on an art project or exercise.
