How to Read Digital Books

Digital books, also known as electronic books (eBooks), are any text that has been formatted for reading on a computer, mobile device or eBook reader. Both publishers and users can create Digital books, which come in a wide variety of formats that fit specific devices or computer programs. Digital books are small files (roughly 200 KB to 1 MB), making it possible to store hundreds of files while only taking up the computer space of a single music album.

Search for your eBook online in one of two ways. Either search for the title of the book online, adding "eBook" at the end of it in the search bar, or search through a specific digital bookstore. Digital books can be downloaded from several online locations, including Sony's Reader Store, Microsoft Reader and Barnes Noble's NOOKbook Store. When searching for a digital book, be sure that the source that you are downloading it from also explains what programs you need to read the book. If, for example, you are downloading an eBook from Microsoft, you will need to download Microsoft Reader to read it.

After you have successfully downloaded the digital book of your choice, load the file into the reader program. Most reader programs allow you to drag and drop the digital books directly into a library. If they do not, they will explain how to best add the book to the program's library. Digital book reader programs explain which devices they are comparable with, so if you are downloading a book for a specific reader, be sure to note its comparability before purchasing the book.

After you have loaded the book into your program's library, you will be able to read it by selecting it and opening it through the program. You may also choose to load the book onto a dedicated device, such as a cell phone, iPod or iPad. Dedicated devices include the Sony Reader, Amazon Kindle and the Nook, which are specifically designed to store and display eBooks.

If you purchase a dedicated eBook device, note the software's compatibility to see which extra formats it will allow. Some devices allow PDF, HTML or TEXT eBooks to be viewed, and if these are files you commonly use, your eBook device may be able to host them for you.
