How to Use Chicken Rings to Bind Books

There is nothing quite like submersing yourself into the pages of a good book. But books can be expensive, and with frequent use there is the potential that eventually they may fall apart. But rather than discard your favorite novels or spend hundreds of dollars on hardcover books, you can bind them yourself with chicken rings, also known as binder rings.

Things You'll Need

  • Book
  • 2 pieces of cardboard or heavy-weight scrapbook paper
  • Binder rings
  • 2 or 3 small C-clamps
  • Drill press or hole punch
  • Laminate paper (optional)
  • Super glue

Instructions

    • 1

Align the pages of your book as flush on all sides as you possibly can. Clamp your book together using small C-clamps along the spine in at least two places, or more for larger books.

    • 2

Drill holes into your book along the spine at equal distances using a drill press. You can bind your book in as few or as many places as you would like, but keep in mind that the more rings you ultimately use, the more secure your book will be. If a drill press is not available, you can use a hole punch and divide the book into smaller sections to punch before you clamp it together.

    • 3

Add a back and front cover to your book (if one is not already available). Use either a thin piece of cardboard or heavy-weight scrapbook paper as a cover to help protect your book. For added protection, you can place laminate paper over your covers.

    • 4

Insert your binder rings into each of the holes you have created along the spine of your book. Fasten the open ends of your binder rings securely. For added durability, add a small amount of super glue to the area where your binder ring closes to prevent it from accidentally opening during use.
