How to Make a Fabric Case for an eReader

Having an eReader can provide thousands of books in a portable, lightweight venue. Although they're great for vacations, business trips and the living room, they need a cover for protection and privacy. Do-it-yourself eReader case varieties include projects as simple as cutting and hemming shirtsleeves to repurposing fabric cinch bags.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose your materials. Select an attractive, sturdy felt, as this will serve as the outer shell. Consider choosing a bright or fun material for the inner lining. Choose a complementary thread color. Focus more on the thickness of the wadding than the color. The wadding will be sewn between the felt and material to serve as protective thickness and won't be visible.

    • 2

Measure your eReader. Use these base measurements and add the following: Cut wadding an additional 1.5 inches in both length and width; cut interior material an additional 2 inches in length and width; and cut felt an additional 2.5 inches in width and 14.5 inches in length.

    • 3

Place the fabric and wadding together, fabric side down. Place the wadding in the middle of the fabric. Pin in place if desired. There will be a rim of fabric. This will allow you to later trim the fabric for a more polished look. Sew together using a sewing machine or needle and thread. Remove pins as you work.

    • 4

Fold the felt in half, then iron it flat. Pin the wadding and fabric piece securely to the felt. Remember that the felt will serve as the outside piece and the fun fabric as the inside liner. Therefore, the wadding should be secured between the felt and fabric.

    • 5

Turn the fabric grouping “inside out” so that the felt is facing inward when creating the seam. This will provide a cleaner, more polished look when finished. Sew these pieces together, length sides only. Remember that the top portion needs to remain open so that you can easily slide the eReader in and out.

    • 6

Create an additional seam on the felt slightly above the top of the wadding. This will enable you to keep the bulk in place, therefore allowing you to more easily slip the eReader into and out of the case.

    • 7

Trim any excess as desired. However, consider leaving a quarter of an inch to an inch of the felt for aesthetics and function.

    • 8

Sew a colorful seam at the lip of the project. This seam will resemble a hem and will be placed toward the top of the felt.

    • 9

Turn the cover inside out with the felt portion now outside and the colorful material on the inside.
