Store books in their dust jackets in an area that has a regulated climate. High temperatures and humidity will cause the dust jacket to discolor and become brittle.
Avoid placing liquids on or near the book jacket. Beverages can leave moisture rings that are impossible to remove. Accidental spills are even more dangerous since the liquid will first make the paper susceptible to tearing, then the paper dries rigid and will crumble if handled excessively.
Move books away from windows or light sources. Sunlight and florescent bulbs will fade exposed parts of the books. If possible, cover book shelves with a lightweight curtain to prevent light exposure.
Remove and replace books carefully from their shelves to avoid accidentally ripping the dust jacket. If the cover is damaged, do not attempt to mend it. Tape and glue will yellow the paper, while paperclips will leave rust marks over time.
Purchase archival quality plastic book covers to enclose the paper book covers. The plastic is lightweight and flexible and will protect the exterior of the book from moisture, dirt and fading from light sources.
