This program is similar to the AR (Accelerated Reading) programs in school where kids read books and take quizzes based on what they read. Book Adventure provides kids with an opportunity to earn real prizes. Kids will need to register (either on their own or under a parent's or teacher's account) before they may begin earning points for prizes. They can log in as a student and click on "Quiz-O-Matic" where they'll have the opportunity to choose the book for which they want to take their quiz. They may type in a book title, author or ISBN to search. If they have no idea which book they want, they can click on "Book Finder" instead, then narrow their search by genre and grade level. They'll then be shown a list of books available on the site along with each book's reading level. Once they take (and pass) the quiz for their book, they'll earn points which they may save and redeem for prizes such as a 6-month subscription to "Highlights" magazine, e-books or a candy bar. To accompany their prizes, parents and teachers may also create custom-made Book Adventure certificates. This is a year-round program and kids may join at any time.
Pizza Hut's Book It! is a popular reading incentive program among teachers and home educators for kids in kindergarten through sixth grade. The program runs from October 1 through March 31, though parents and schools need to register by late June in order to participate in the program the following school year. While homeschoolers may register on their own, schools must register as a group (not just one teacher). Parents or teachers help kids set reading goals (20 minutes each day, two books each week, etc.), then kids keep track of their progress on their own reading progress chart. Once students have met their goals, they receive a reading award certificate good for one personal pan pizza at a participating Pizza Hut. While the program ends in March, award certificates are good through May 1st.
Many libraries offer reading incentive programs over the summer (typically running from sometime in June until sometime in August). Some libraries include all ages while others are only for school-aged kids. Library summer reading programs are usually themed and offer rewards for children who meet their written goals by the end of the summer.
Bookstores also usually offer summer reading programs. Barnes & Noble's reading program allows kids of all ages to participate, and after they've read eight books, they will receive a coupon good for one free book (from a pre-selected list of books). Borders also offers a similar program, requiring kids to read any 10 books, log them on their "Double Dog Dare" worksheet, then bring their sheets into any Borders to redeem for a free (pre-selected) book.
