How to Make & Print a Comic Book for Kids

You can even involve your own children in the process, creating a comic book that will be a memorable family treasure for years to come. However, if you have the creative ability, you may want to create a comic book for publication. If this is the case, you will need to produce a comic book that meets professional standards.

Instructions

    • 1

Look at various comic books for examples. Notice the cartoon characters and what features make them funny. Read the different stories to see how they compare with each other and how the storyline is conveyed through the use of cartoon pictures and text.

    • 2

Create your cartoon characters. Draw a range of cartoon characters in your sketchbook. You might want to start by drawing simple shapes to form the body of your cartoon characters (like a circle or oval for the head and body and long thin shapes for limbs). Be playful with shape as cartoon characters are expected to look funny. Fill in the characters' facial features and draw clothes on them. Remember, cartoon characters need to be big, bold and exaggerated, as they are meant to look visually humorous. Add color to your characters. Take your fine black marker pen and draw over the pencil outline to make your characters stand out.

    • 3

Write the story for your comic. Think about a dilemma that could be resolved by your hero/heroine by the end of the story.

    • 4

Create a dummy comic, which is a rough, freehand sketched version of your comic book. Creating a dummy comic helps you visualize your story and where the text will be placed. Lay out the frames and determine how many pages you want to create.

    • 5

Prepare the frames for your story by drawing square or rectangular boxes with a pencil and ruler, making sure to leave an equal margin around the border of each page. Start drawing your cartoon lightly in pencil so that you can erase errors. Apply color. Using your fine black marker pen, draw over the outline of your drawing and create your speech bubbles.

    • 6

Photocopy your illustrated pages using your all-in-one printer. Assemble your pages in the correct order and staple pages together to complete your comic book.

Alternatively, scan your pages into your personal computer. You can use Microsoft Word, Publisher or a picture program to add effects and visually enhance your illustrations. Print off your comic and staple the pages together.
