How to Make a Storyboard for a Reading Fair

Storyboards combine all the elements of a story in one presentation. Viewers gain a better understanding of what a story is about through images and text placed in chronological order. Submit a storyboard to a local book fair displaying your favorite book. Create detailed illustrations of the story and provide brief captions of each image, to assist readers in comprehending the idea behind the story. The storyboard may strike the interest of the guests, who may want to add a new book to their list.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase a 30-by-40-inch tri-fold board from a paper store. Depending on the reading fair submission guidelines, a 36-by-48-inch tri-fold board may be used. Avoid purchasing a board larger the indicated size on the reading fair guidelines to prevent your being disqualified.

    • 2

Lay the sheet of 11-by-17-inch construction paper horizontally on a table or desk. Draw a picture from a scene in the book on the construction paper, representing what the book is about. Color the drawing with markers. On completion, glue the picture to the center of the tri-fold board, six inches below the top edge of the board.

    • 3

Enter the title of the book at the top center of the board, one inch above the illustrated picture. Draw the book title in pencil and trace or fill in with colored marker. Write the name of the author and illustrator one inch below the illustrated book image with marker as well. Then enter the name of the book publisher below the author and illustrator's name, followed by the year the book was published.

    • 4

Describe the main character(s), setting and synopsis of the story on individual sheets of 5-by-7-inch paper. Write the information in a clear and concise manner, permitting readers to understand what is being presented. Paste the three sheets of paper on the left flap of the tri-fold board, two inches apart from each other.

    • 5

Briefly explain the conflict, solution and mood of the story on individual sheets of 5-by-7-inch paper. Glue the sheets of paper to the right flap of the storyboard, one inch apart. Write succinct summary explaining the author's reasoning behind the story and what message was conveyed. Enter this information on another sheet of 5-by-7-inch paper and glue the paper below the explanation on the mood of the story.

    • 6

Draw and color images on each component of the story, in place of writing the information, on the sheets of 5-by-7-inch paper. The drawings add character to the board along with an artistic element to the overall presentation. Place 3-by-2-inch strips of paper below each illustration, explaining what each picture represents.
