How to Cite a Book Summary

Authors of research papers or treatises must include citations of their research materials. Books, videos, magazines, pamphlets and newspapers are types of documents that must be cited. In addition it is often necessary to cite book summaries. In the academic world the Chicago Manual of Style is the go-to reference for proper citation formats. Be sure to use proper citation formats for your research and projects.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine if your summary falls under the humanities (English, social studies, psychology and soft sciences) or the hard sciences (biology, chemistry etc.) place an asterisk next to the citation in your text and include a bibliography reference at the bottom of the page.

    • 2

Cite the book summary title, or if the summary is imbedded within another document, include the page number in parentheses. Write the last name, then first name of the summary author followed by a period.

    • 3

Enter in additional authors to the summary after the first followed by a comma and separated with "and." For example, if the summary was penned by Katie Jones and Bobby Smith, it is written Jones, Katie and Smith, Bobby. For three authors use Jones, Katie; Smith, Bobby and Thompson, Samuel.

    • 4

Write down the review title after all other information if it is a humanities-based summary. Write down month and date of scientific summaries.

    • 5

The final citation should read (for humanities) such as Jones, Katie. Reviews of the Isle of Mann (32-34), The National Magazine of Book Summary.

    • 6

Format science citations so they mimic Jones, Katie. Meta-study of Pelagic Penguins (34-36,) The International Penguin Association, 5/12/2001.
