How to Open New Books

You just picked up that brand new hardcover bestseller, and you can't wait to dive in. Not so fast. Before you crack open your new treasure, take a few moments to get it in the proper reading condition. Believe it or not, there is a correct way to open a new book. Spending a few minutes to condition your new book will make it easier to read and reduce cracks in the binding that may, eventually, cause the book to always open in one place or even fall apart.

Instructions

    • 1

Wash and dry your hands. If your new book has a dust cover, remove it.

    • 2

Place the closed book with its spine flat on a table.

    • 3

Hold the closed pages and allow the back and front covers to fall open.

    • 4

Allow a small section of the front pages to fall open, about one-quarter inch or so.

    • 5

Allow a small section of the back pages to fall open, about one-quarter inch or so.

    • 6

Repeat steps 4 and 5, alternating between the front and back pages and gently pressing the pages down, until you reach the center of the book.

    • 7

Close the book, and lay it on its side. If the top cover pops open, gently press it down. Put the dust jacket on and enjoy your new book.
