How to Receive Book Donations

Donating a book is a good way to help promote literacy programs and the love of reading in any community. Organizations such as Donation Town are dedicated to putting books into the hands of people who cannot afford them, and will help find charities that need books. If you're a library, a school or a reading program in need of book donations, there are a number of effective ways to go about achieving your goal.

Instructions

    • 1

Make sure your request for books is detailed and specific. Create a wish list of books desired, if appropriate, or the types of books preferred. This prevents confusion on the part of the people to whom you are making the request. If your book needs are more general, it's important to list what books you would deem inappropriate.

    • 2

Advertise. Place an ad in your local classified section of the newspaper or on craigslist requesting book donations. Create a Facebook or MySpace account and post your book donation request directly online. If you have a website, link your Internet address to social media sites directing those interested to seek more information about your book donation requirements.

    • 3

Create a community book donation drive. Set aside a day, preferably on the weekend, to set up a booth with some refreshments where local citizens can come and learn about your organization and the need for book donations. This is a direct way to meet people in the community who may not be aware of your goals, and answer any questions they may have about what kinds of books you need and the best way to donate them.

    • 4

Perform nonprofit outreach. If you're already part of a nonprofit group, reach out to other nonprofit organizations to form alliances that could benefit everyone. This can be done even if you're not part of a nonprofit group. There are many local, state and national organizations who have been involved in receiving book donations for years and their expertise may exceed your own. The American Library Association (ALA) and First Book are two examples of organizations that could be of help.

Focus on logistics. Have everything organized to make it easy for people to give books without inconveniencing them. Organize a way to pick up the books if people are unable to bring them to you. Have a drop-off area that is convenient for those who want to donate. Consider setting up an online system where people can donate over the Internet and schedule a time for you to pick up the books.
