Why was the 1st book in Harry Potter series renamed?

The first book in the Harry Potter series was *never* renamed. It has always been titled "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone".

However, in the United States, the book was published as "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone". This change was made by the American publisher, Scholastic, who believed that "Sorcerer's Stone" would be more appealing to American audiences.

So, it wasn't a renaming, but a change in title for the American market.
