Although not popularly renowned for its publishing ventures, Alabama boasts several award-winning and innovative publishing companies. Among them are Menasha Ridge Press, which specializes in outdoor and wilderness literature, including numerous travel guides; and The University of Alabama Press, which aims to further academic research, especially with regards to the southern United States.
